Sometimes, I hear Owner Operators say they are building "equity" in their truck.. Pick up any truckers publication and look at the trucks for sale. Look at the asking prices and then note that they aren't sold at the low prices. Nobody wants their own truck.

There are so many trucks for sale across the entire US that "equity" in a truck is next to worthless.

WHAT ABOUT COMPANY DRIVERS? Most company drivers are in the same boat. They drive 1,000 miles and get paid for 850. They sit and wait and wait at shippers, for what, $10 or $15 an hour AFTER 2 or 4 hours just to turn around and do it again at the consignee. Cutting into their 14 hour work day. Oh but after you've sat for hours, you can drive 650 miles or better. Illegal immigrants make more money and get more respect than that. Companies advertising $.45 or $.50 a mile are pure lies. If you actually drive 1,000 miles and they only pay you for 850 miles, you are not getting $.45 or $.50 a mile. KNOW how these companies figure the miles you are being paid for. So many different software programs may have as much as 20% difference on the same city to city run. For example, Knight Transportation started me out at $.32 a mile. When going back and figuring all my miles hauling their loads and what they actually paid me for, I made less than $.265 a mile. Then, on top of that, you only get 1,800 to 2,500 miles each week. Your out Saturdays and weekends just to try and make it. You can't make a decent living. Not even close to what the recruiter told you. Don't believe this?? Look at your pay stubs and start writing down the ACTUAL miles you drive vs. what they pay you for. You want to be paid ODOMETER MILES. If a company tempts you with $.55 a mile but only when you have a loads going to the State of Maine and only 10 loads go there each month... come on, you don't make $.55 a mile with that company.... but they sure want you to think "$.55 a mile".

Sadly, in this industry, the average company driver lives paycheck to paycheck and couldn't take two weeks off to look for another driver job even if they wanted to.
